Creative, productive collaborations are, unfortunately, not the norm. We have all had experiences in teams that involved any one of the following dysfunctions: low innovation and drive, hierarchy as “power over,” a lack of trust, little to no creativity, games of ego, or the delivery of results through fear.
The practice of “generative teaming” is needed in today’s complex and easily polarizing world. When a team grows an awareness of itself as an interdependent human system, when it experiences increasing and sustainable levels of trust, when it improves its capacity to productively engage with differences of opinion, and when in taps into the energy of motivating shared goals…. it learns how to deliver extraordinary results without individual burnout or collaborative dysfunctions.
Growing the leadership capacity to navigate complexity, include diverse viewpoints, and innovate one’s business or function into the new forms that are required by the needs and wants of society is key to a healthy business ecosystem.
My work with teams and leaders in various sectors and geographies has road tested the usefulness of systems thinking in a team environment, the necessity for deep curiosity and generous listening, the value of engaging in healthy discussions to innovate and the value of the leadership research and practices of my colleague Otto Scharmer, as well as the research and frameworks of Patrick Lencioni, and Amy Edmondson.
